The Beat of Your Own Drum!

Ever been to someone’s house that’s painted in various Earth tones and is totally decked out with tribal African accents? I’m talking the works-wooden sculptures, animal prints, burning candles & therapeutic incense- where you can’t help but kick back and enjoy the Feng Shui. Well it’ll be dope if you suggest (or maybe even purchase as the holiday season is soon approaching) a unique piece of your own- like a set of Djembe HiFi Speakerdrums. There’s nothing more stimulating than drums and with that idea in mind, this manufacturer wired speakers in the core of the drums optimizing power and creativity thus creating great sound and a hell of a conversation piece. It’ll blow you away! Get into it.

WANTED: Fashion & Art Junky.

It’s unfortunate that I caught on to her game in the late summer, but I’m sure she’s continuing to do it way big for the Fall. Her name is Chanel Kennebrew and she brands her crafts as JunkPrints, but it sure doesn’t look like junk to me. These pieces of art are an edgy pile of its own. From tees to tanktops, hoodies and handbags, dresses and even prints, she has devised a way to impose some of her own style & artistic flair into these prized possessions. Add all that up with a winning smile (she’s beautiful y’all) and you can consider me sold!

Ailey at the Airport?

Alvin Ailey, one of the most prestigous dance institutions in NYC, has annual performances at City Center, has their beautiful bodies showcased throughout the city and tours worldwide, but don’t you find it crazy that one of their dancers was recently detained by Israeli airport security because of his Muslim name? Abdur-Rahim Jackson. Sounds pretty harmless to me, but these security officers just had to make sure. I dunno y’all- sounds kinda shady to me too, but Jackson says it has happened to him before “when he returned to the United States from a trip to the Dominican Republic.” Imagine going on a six-nation tour, watching your fiancee clear passport control & when it’s your turn- security is summoned. You know being a Black man you have to remain contained & composed but you also have to do or say something quick. Luckily, Jackson was used to the routine and up for an additional solo performance because they weren’t buying his Alvin Ailey brochures- including photos of him dancing. After dancing for them and answering a few more questions, they let him go advising him to “change his name.” What’s up with that? Some things still ain’t right…

Monique Lhuillier: Spring ‘09

There’s nothing worse than waking up at the crack of dawn to go to work. Pretty dull morning, don’t you think? How about waking up to go see noted fashion designer, Monique Lhuillier, in the tents at Bryant Park for New York’s Fashion Week. Any takers? …Yeah, I bet. This one is for you Ladies. Though the weather wasn’t the greatest, we went out in good spirits to witness her Spring ‘09 collection-Luxurious Island Tropic Chic. She effortlessly brought it to us again, this time incorporating “dry crisp fabrics, straw-braiding techniques, basket patterns and wave prints.” She took us thru a beautiful Spring day in the life of THAT B!*%H! You know the women y’all (yes, y’all LADIES!) subconsciously envy because she’s always on her A game- morning, noon and at night. The Monique Lhuillier woman is always dressed & she knows she’s HOTTAH than THEM ALL! Check these pieces out & maybe you can try putting yourself together more creatively than her someday…

SS09: Rodarte. MARC. Betsey

Rodarte.
The Mulleavy sisters are an extremely creative duo who pulls their inspiration from unordinary and even random things. They are one of my favorite newcomers that are causing a frenzy in the fashion world.

MARC by Marc Jacobs.
Well on his way to becoming a classic designer mastering loose fitting comfort with an edge. We all love this man.

Betsey Johnson.
Never without risk, this young-at-heart designer, always brings her avante-garde full color spectrum to the table without regrets and of course with her signature end of show cartwheel.

DIESEL Impact on Fashion!

I’ve been having all these plans to go to the tents, and I haven’t even made one show as yet. Been a little busy with some projects… supposed to go see the Ana Sui show tomorrow we shall see, I hope I make it. But I have been able to keep up with the shows thanks to the wonderful invention called the Internet. are a couple of highlights. In their 2nd season, check out Diesel Black Gold:

Obama Turns Up the HEAT on Palin

So I was reading some election news online and came across Obama’s opinion of Mrs. Sarah Palin, Senator John McCain’s pick for VP. I was really interested in knowing what he thought because she had such an outspoken opinion on my pick for president. Let me know what you think :

Obama said last week’s Republican National Convention did a good job of highlighting Palin’s biography — “Mother, governor, moose shooter. That’s cool,” he said. But he said Palin really is just another Republican politician, one who is stretching the truth about her record. “When John McCain gets up there with Sarah Palin and says, `We’re for change,’ … what are they talking about?” Obama said Monday, arguing that they aren’t offering different ideas from President Bush and they are just trying to steal his campaign theme because it seemed to be working.

“It was just like a month ago they were all saying, `Oh, it’s experience, experience, experience.’ Then they chose Palin and they started talking about change, change, change,” he said.

News Brief from the Streets.

Week In Review: Sept. 1- 6

We started off the month of September right with a huge carnival in the streets of Brooklyn. We celebrated the 41st annual West Indian American Day Parade and millions of people were out in good spirits to enjoy the unique essence of the Caribbean culture. We were reminded and forewarned, however, of the powerful wrath of Hurricane Gustav lurking in the distance as it was predicted to wreak havoc on the Caribbean. Sadly, large numbers of people lost their lives to this force to be reckoned with and it didn’t die out until after moving on to its next victim, New Orleans, causing just minor damage. The inhabitants of the still developing city, who experienced devastating losses three years prior during Hurricane Katrina, were told to evacuate the city as Gustav was estimated to do WAY more damage than Katrina. [Haven’t these people gone through enough? Don’t worry my people in New Orleans; there are better days coming. Keep ya heads up Louisiana!] Luckily, New Orleans barely made out with few scrapes and bruises- just lost power as a result of fallen trees and debris. Like a gang of misfits, Hurricanes Hanna, Ike, and Josephine quickly formed behind Gustav leaving us a bit on edge, but we will remain steadfast and hope that this hurricane season doesn’t linger for too long. What the F**K who the hell let Rihanna on the stage? I L.O.V.E. this girl but come on, it was like a repeat of Lady Brit’s performance last year. I personally think she was set up.

Spotlight

   Denise Vasi

This morning I woke up and had someone on my mind. No matter what I did I couldn’t shake her. I had been seeing Denise Vasi everywhere lately. I become rather excited when I get a glimpse of her on advertisements or turning on the T.V. and catching her on “Law & Order: Criminal Intent” or her most recent stint as Randi on “All My Children.” I had been wanting to feature her for a while now, hopefully with an interview…

Unfortunately I’ve been provoked to write by hateful people. Are they? As I began to gather information I decided to Google her. Amongst the many photo sites and links to information on Denise I came across a blog pretty much devoted to hating on her. I, for one, have watched her work work her way from the bottom to get where she is. Claims of lying about age and background sound crazy to me. Its the entertainment industry. Show me one person that uses their real name, date of birth or whatever it takes to contend and get a job. Instead of praising ones accomplishments we instead tarnish their journey.

What do you call such actions? Jealousy, hating or simply speaking the truth?

And once that “truth” is spoken? Then what?

They lose, You win?      Hmmmm…..
