He dropped Lil from his name about six years ago, chopped off the childish cornrows for a more mature Caesar-cut, and apparently his new album is rumored to be his first to receive a Parental Advisory sign. The world watched him grow up and now only 22 years of age and well over 10 years experience in the game, today Bow Wow is scheduled to release his 6th solo studio album, New Jack City II. With singles like “You Can Get It All” (featuring Johnta Austin) and “Marco Polo,” it seems like Jermaine Dupri has to keep a watchful ear and eye on Bow Wow who’s not Lil’ anymore.

With such an immense loyalty for his hometown, rapper Flo Rida couldn’t help but name himself after the Sunshine State and as a fairly new artist, he’s definitely shining amongst the best of ‘em. On his debut album, he popularized Nelly’s Apple Bottom jeans with the hit single, “Low” (featuring T-Pain) and if you tune into the radio at some point today, your head will be spinnin’ with his new hit, “Right Round” (featuring Kesha). This single is not only heavy on rotation on the radio and TV, but it’s currently at the top of the Billboard 100 charts and on top in digital downloads. Today, Flo Rida is scheduled to release his sophomore album, R.O.O.T.S. (Route of Overcoming the Struggle) and if the other tracks on this new album is as successful as its leading single, he should have no problem getting over the sophomore album jinx.

If you didn’t already know, I went to college upstate New York in Albany- the state’s capital- and graduated almost 4 years ago. Ever since completing my final steps from adolescence into adulthood, I collected my diploma in 2005 and never stepped foot back into the city of Albany. It’s not that I was unappreciative for the opportunities I had while in school, but it was a means to end and in my opinion, never a place I could call home. But this past weekend I put all of those ill feelings aside and decided to take a roadtrip to Troy (just a few miles outside of Albany) to visit a friend of mine who was celebrating a birthday and her final days Upstate. I know, I make Upstate NY seem like prison, but trust me- that’s how it feels while you’re up there sometimes and it’s partly why my friend was moving back to NYC. While I enjoyed spending time with friends submerging ourselves into the environment that initially brought us all together, I must say- some things never change. Now don’t get me wrong, by no means am I referring to my friends- they’re all still the same; instead, I’m referring to Albany. Read the rest of this entry »

For most people when it comes to hair, deciding what to do with it is a major undertaking and the decision to go natural is life altering. Maintaining natural hair doesn’t have to be hard. There are many all natural techniques out there that can help keep your locks and afros on point. I have compiled a list of recipes that will show you how to create your own hair care regimen right in your own kitchen.
Avocado Conditioner
Ingredients: 1 small jar of mayonnaise, 1/2 avocado
Directions: Peel avocado and remove the pit. Mix all ingredients in a medium-sized bowl with your hands until it’s a consistent green color. Smooth into hair being careful to work it through to the ends. Use shower cap or plastic wrap to seal body heat in. Leave on hair for 20 minutes. For deeper conditioning wrap a hot, damp towel around your head over the plastic, or use a hair dryer set to a low to medium heat.
Rosemary Hot Oil Treament
Ingredients: 1/2 cup of dried rosemary leaves, 1/2 cup soybean oil
Directions: Combine ingredients and heat until warm. Strain through a fine strainer or cheesecloth. Coat the entire head and hair with the oil mixture, working it through to the ends. Wrap hair in plastic wrap then wrap in a warm towel. Leave oil on hair for 15 minutes. Wash hair until oil is completely removed.
Ginger Dandruff Treatment
Ingredients: Ginger root, 1 teaspoon sesame oil, 1 teaspoon lemon juice
Directions: Squeeze ginger root through press to obtain one tablespoon of juice. Mix all ingredients. Apply to scalp and let dry before shampooing. Repeat three times a week.
Natural Hair Gel
Ingredients: 1/2 to 1 teaspoon unflavored gelatin
Directions: Thoroughly dissolve gelatin in 1 cup warm water. Keep refrigerated in sealed container.
Frizz Control for Curly Hair
Ingredients: 1 small aloe vera leaf
Directions: Snip off end of leaf and apply a dollop of aloe vera gel to palm. Work through hair to ends.

It’s Sunday, and I’m back with your BKBOYEEZ Eats recipe for your tasting pleasure. We started with a healthy nutty breakfast, then an easy but impressive snack, and now what else but a slammin’ entree to finish up the month. I introduce to you, my “Indoor Grilled Chili BBQ Chicken”.
Ingredients: Chicken (leg, thigh, and breast parts works best), chili powder, black pepper, salt, cayenne pepper, paprika powder, garlic powder, all purpose seasoning, your favorite teriyaki sauce, a pre-made onion vinergarette (found in your local super market), your favorite store bought BBQ sauce, brown sugar, a lemon, pimento seeds and your favorite marinara sauce.
First make sure your chicken is clean (I usually rinse my chicken with vinegar or lemon juice). Then season your chicken with black pepper, salt, cayenne pepper, paprika powder, garlic powder, all purpose seasoning, the juice of a lemon, teriyaki sauce, and the onion vinegarette. Let that marinate for about an hour along with the pimento seeds (about 6). Mix in a sauce pan about 2 cups of the marinara sauce, 1 ½ cups of the BBQ sauce, about ¼ cup of brown sugar, about 3 dashes of chilli powder, and bring to a slow simmer. Now here is how we achieve that grilled taste we all love- if you do not have a stove top grill, a George Foreman grill or an electric griddle, you can definitely use a cast iron pan. Heat your grill or pan to high heat and place your chicken on the grill or pan until you see charred marks or until chicken is about half cooked. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees, place the chili BBQ sauce (reserve about ¼ of the sauce) over the chicken and place the chicken in the oven covered for about 20 minutes. Then uncover the chicken, brush on the rest of the chili BBQ sauce, and place back in the oven for about 10 minutes. You’re done and I’m pretty sure you can figure out the rest. Enjoy!

As you all know we have been happily looking forward to Spring and the fashion fun that it brings. Bella Honey, one of our avid readers, introduced me to the term “RECESSIONISTA,” so all of you out there- this is for you! This concept came about from a conversation between myself and Dre. We were going through a bag of old clothes and we kept coming across some great pieces (much thanks to Auntie Bev!) I had a thought: do a shoot based on “old skool” meeting “new skool”. I created looks that consisted of at least one vintage piece that the look would be based on. Sorry guys, this is strictly for the ladies, but we got you. Promise. The process was CRAZY! The project was conceptualized on Wednesday (we chose potential looks, acquired models and prayed we could pull this off) and was executed on Thursday (we prayed some more, called models to make sure they were awake and prepping, endured a horrible taxi ordeal on the way to the shoot that I was already late for, prepped the clothes, did the model’s hair and makeup and styled the girls, while Dre set up lighting and finalized locations). Somehow we made it through the day and then had a night of choosing pics and editing. This is a long tedious process, but we hope the final product meets your approval. All of these looks were created from vintage finds and other pieces from the model’s wardrobes. No clothes were purchased for the shoot. Hopefully, this will inspire you to go through your closet and maybe hit up your grandmother’s while you’re at it before you head out to the stores this season.

To Whitney and Teneshia, thanks so much for putting up with me and for GOING IN! I can’t forget Dre, who played photographer on this shoot. There’s no way I could have done this without you.

It’s ya boi FaBid here and as you know, I bring you your weekly current events. So let me put you up on what’s been going on this week.
Unfortunately there are very few new things happening in news at this time. As always during social, financial and political hard times the news media is dominated by these issues. I, like many others, seem to watch television and read the paper and feel like it’s the same thing day after day. It’s kind of depressing. Make sure you keep it right here.

How do you maintain your individuality and still be part of the team? I’m a person who believes that you can definitely play your part in a group and still indulge in personal endeavors. I’m currently- as you all know- one of the founding members of the BKBOYEEZ. It’s definitely been a struggle learning how to take other people’s opinion and well being into consideration when making decisions that I think affect only me. In partnerships- especially when it consists of more than one other partner- majority rules, which means at some point or another someone has to just swallow their pride and do things they don’t necessarily want to do. How much should one be willing to give of themselves to be considered a true team player and still fulfill the goals they have set for themself?

Maybe it’s just me, but Brooklynites- don’t you find it difficult to get a cab to take you into Brooklyn from the city- especially at night? It’s almost as if they’d prefer to take you thru the tunnel to New Jersey (another state!), rather than across the bridge to another NYC borough. Nowadays, I have to resort to lying about my destination in order to get home (crazy, right?) and after breathing a sigh of relief once I’m finally in the borough- it’s almost as if I have to coax the driver to go deeper into Brooklyn. I feel like if some of them could, they’d drop me off at the end of the Brooklyn or Manhattan bridge, take my money, expect a tip then send me on my way. In these times and especially in my current situation- cabbin’ it back to BK afterhours is not a necessity, it’s a luxury considering MTA is always going my way! As New Yorkers, we’re not obligated to patronize yellow cabs and that’s what some drivers fail to realize. And to make matters worse, some of them are rude, argumentative, extremely selective in the passenger(s) they pick up and often times, wreckless drivers. I’m not saying all NYC taxi drivers are all of these things, but there are some bad apples in the Big Apple and they should be called out! Despite the stigmas associated with Brooklyn, it’s still a service that the passenger has chosen to pay for, but at what cost?
We all have a taxi cab confession or horror story to tell. What’s yours?

We all personally know what we have to do become the best that we can be. So, why don’t we all as Nike says “just do it”? It’s like having a treasure map in your back pocket and only taking it out to admire it rather than running with it. Remaining focus, humble, and faithful to our goal are rudiments to our formula. So let’s grab this treasure map, get the tools, and run to our goal because the ages of excuses are over.

I recently came across a video response from a close homie and BKGEERL in regard to the America’s Next Top Model Season 13 cattle-call for ladies 5′7″ and under. Not only is her commentary hitting some serious truths, but it’s hilarious. What do YOU think?

Yo! It’s Restaurant Week in Brooklyn which means you can dine at participating restaurants throughout Brooklyn for only $23. I know we’re in the middle of a recession and dining out doesn’t happen as often as you’d like, but you’d be a fool not to get up on this offer! For $23 you’ll experience a three-course meal that would probably run you upward of $60 and you haven’t even had anything to drink as yet. Click on our “Visit Brooklyn!” link on the right-hand site of our page to find a listing of participating restaurants and more details, so you can’t say we never told you! It began on March 23rd and will be over on April 2nd, so jump on it.

For our final selection in our Woman’s month series, we’ve decided to celebrate the life and achievements of two influential women who were taken from us all too suddenly- but not without leaving an impact. We’ll start off with the late and dear rose from Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn- Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979- August 25, 2001)- known to us all as just, Aaliyah. Introduced into the world of music by R&B’s artist, R. Kelly- it was her amazing physique, warm smile, incredible dancing ability and overall star quality that just did it for you! Remembered for classic albums like One In A Million and Age Ain’t Nothing But A Number, produced by Timbaland & Missy Elliott, young Aaliyah- only in her mere teens was able to win over the hearts of the music world and the top fashion gurus behind Victoria Secret and Tommy Hilfiger. On top of the world and on top of her game, she successfully completed her third self-titled album, Aaliyah. At this point she already had TV and movie credits under her belt including Romeo Must Die and Queen of the Damned, but a tragic plane crash led to her early death. Attempting to return to the states after finishing the music video “Rock The Boat” off her junior album, Aaliyah’s private plane reportedly crashed shortly after takeoff about 200 feet from the runway. At the age of 22, she would have gone on to churning out more hits and co-starring in more motions pictures but her sudden death forced producers to either find a replacement for the roles they created for her, or just scrap going forward with the film altogether. Eight years after her death, her legacy still remains throughout the world of R&B. Read the rest of this entry »
