BK&BEYOND
It’s ya boi FaBid here and as you know, I bring you your weekly current events. So let me put you up on what’s been going on this week.
- Without financial help from the government the New York City Board of Education will have to go forth with plans to lay off 5,000 employees- 2,000 of them being teachers. With a $1.4 billion budget shortfall, even if the city were to get the maximum amount allotted from the Feds, schools would still be short $500 million short by July.
- Unemployment is on the rise. New York City has experienced its highest month to month increase in unemployment on record. We are experiencing wide spread layoffs in just about every profession. One of the few fields experiencing an increase in job growth has been education and health services.
- President Obama conducted his first internet town hall meeting. One of the most popular topics was the legalization of marijuana. It was suggested that legalization could help stimulate the economy. Weed becoming legal would allow the government to regulate it by instituting taxes, enforce age limits, and build an industry here in the U.S. that would create jobs. As one would assume, the president is not seeing that.
- MTA scheduled to lay off 1,100 workers in order to help clear their deficit. Just like everyone else they are hoping and waiting for bail out money from the government.
- Plaxico Burress is planning to score a plea deal to avoid jail time for his 2009 arrest on gun charges. (When will it stop? )
Unfortunately there are very few new things happening in news at this time. As always during social, financial and political hard times the news media is dominated by these issues. I, like many others, seem to watch television and read the paper and feel like it’s the same thing day after day. It’s kind of depressing. Make sure you keep it right here.
Stay up and catch my swag
