Art has no boundaries in this day in age. This outlet of free expression comes in so many forms it’s almost impossible to flip through a magazine, watch a music video, or step foot in a building without embarking on someone’s artistic vision. Being artists ourselves, the BKBOYEEZ can relate and can definitely appreciate the necessary strides taken in an effort to honing one’s craft. Brooklyn is not foreign to budding artistic talent and it’s for that reason why we make a conscious effort to highlight the Arts through our new bi-monthly installment: …Artists on the Rise. This month’s featured “artist” on the rise is well on his way toward building a name for himself and a huge following by simply internalizing these words of wisdom by Uncle Jigga: “We’re always here, you’re never there!” Affectionately known to the BKBOYEEZ and amongst the homies as “Fresh,” Curtis Franklin is a humble and hungry, graphic artist out of Brooklyn who is adamant in turning any of his new projects or ideas into a masterpiece- by any means necessary!

Life is a trip, or am I? I’m definitely trippin’ and self-evaluation is so necessary. I don’t know if it’s the universe, karma or God- but things always have a way of coming back around and smacking you in the face. My mother often told me to “treat people the way you want them to treat you” and that has never meant more to me in the past than it does now. Unless you know yourself and are able to be honest with yourself, you will never really know how you want to be treated and will ultimately not know how to treat others. Take some time & get into yourself!
Stay up and catch my swag.

Influenza is hard enough to deal with- now we have SWINE INFLUENZA! How do you think that strand of the flu got to humans? Possibly beastiality? Hmmm, that is the true question. There are some really sick people out there that are into some pretty experimental things. How ever it got here, it’s making a definite impact with almost over 44 reported cases. So how we avoid this flu- since it is stronger than human influenza- is by simply washing your hands and avoiding contact. Those are the methods that’s going to truly work with this alien influenza. I am surprised that no one has mentioned chemical warfare. I mean… they have driven planes into some of the most important buildings of our country. What do you think would stop them from sending someone over here who is infected with a mutating form of the flu to wipe us out. Think about it… it’s a little extreme, but not unheard of. Let’s not forget ANTHRAX!
What do you guys think about this lastest celebrity: the Swine flu?

Tip#5: Start a carpool.
Although the cost of gas has gone down, it’s still heavy on the pocket. More and more, cars hit the road just adding to the Earth’s air pollution. Under any other circumstances, I would recommend public transportation, but with the current state of the MTA I would much rather stage a boycott… HARD BODY! Driving is about to become even more expensive with the new tolls being suggested. My advice is: start a carpool. I know, I know… carpools sound like something reserved for Suburban housewives with their 2.5 kids and investment banker/accountant husbands- not for fresh Brooklyn heads. But just think of the benefits:

Get involved and do something to give back to our planet.

Yesterday I hung out with a close friend of mine, and we were catching up on each other’s lives when she used a phrase that I thought best describes all those situations that make you go- What the F@*K? So here’s the phrase: “What did you want, the gold medal of bullsh!t?” Feel free to make use of this useful phrase. Thanks Ms. Davis.

For starters, I’ve seen the movie Outbreak & I’ve heard of Quarantine. The titles and recurring themes in both of these flicks speak for themselves! This thing we got here is nothing like the motion pictures where you can walk away from the experience more knowledgeable on the issue & relatively entertained- to say the least. Movie night is over y’all- this is the REAL deal and it’s made it’s way to New York. People are falling out left & right and even young school children are falling victim to the mayhem this epidemic is causing. Both our nation’s leaders and scientists are frazzled by the fast spread of the virus & the overall consensus of the masses is in high alert. I don’t know when this thing is going to be over, but I hope it will be sooner than later. Until then, I encourage you to build up your immune system with essential vitamins, wash your hands often, cover your mouth when you cough & sneeze and as messed up as it may sound- stay away from people with the common flu because that’s where it all begins.

Love Rap?
…Well guess who’s back? Mike Jones! Who? MIKE JONES! With his second studio album, The Voice, he’s seems to want to be heard and seen as a different type of rapper. It’s ironic how he’s done away with the platinum grills and that “tippin’ on four fours” mentally on his road to rediscovery, but I guess once you reach a certain age/point in your life- it’s just time. On “Cuddy Buddy,” he reveals a lighter approach to rhymin’ we’re not used to hearing from him, which makes me realize how much it would suck to be an artist who’s not always out with something new. Mike Jones disappeared from the scene for a minute and has to make up for lost time with a new sound and new mentality just to keep up with the Jones. And while I can’t knock him for trying to remain relevant, if you feel otherwise- feel free to take that one up with him personally. Your boy’s got a new number.

Early morning commutes are the worst! Unfortunately, I’m not a morning person to begin with and after struggling to get out of bed, the last thing I need is a jacked up commute. The MTA- like everyone, is feeling the wrath of our current economic climate which causes major changes to our bus and train lines. My consumer perspective is that the MTA is playing! Thousands of people use public transportation every day, and I’m no Mathematician but that sounds like a lot of freakin’ money being generated, but poor service. Why? I couldn’t even begin to understand the financial side of it all and how funds are distributed or how that effects our service. But I do know that I had to let two L trains go by this morning because they were packed like sardines. It has been announced that there will be several cuts to the amount of trains operating during rush hour as well as drastic fare hikes. I don’t know about all of you, but I’m about to learn how to fly.

Want a great body, but can’t commit to a gym membership? Or do you absolutely despise the gym altogether and would rather workout at home? If you answered YES to any of these questions, I’ve got a few solutions for you. Contrary to to the female perspective, Boyeez are simple when it comes to working out. We want to focus on our upper body (i.e. abs, chest, back & arms) while women, on the other hand tend to focus on the ENTIRE body which often leaves you Geerls overwhelmed and unmotivated. Don’t bite off more than you can chew! Ladies, I suggest working out the important parts that are pleasing to a man’s eyes (i.e. abs, arms, butt & legs). As complex as we might seem, we’re very simple beings and that’s probably why we gravitate toward fitness because fitness should be simple too! Try these exercises that both men & women can do at home to ensure our bodies are sittin’ by the summer.

The BKBOYEEZ are advocates of REAL music- the kind with depth & substance, and Aurora “Rory” Barnes’ credentials definitely fit the bill. She’s an award-winning singer/songwriter and accomplished violinist who’s not afraid to spread her reach beyond Manhattan. That’s right Brooklyn, she’s coming to our neck of the woods to perform at BAR4 in Park Slope this Wednesday April 29th. She goes on at 8:45pm, admission is FREE all night and drinks are CHEAP, so you have no excuse as to why you’re not present- unless you’re under 21. She’s gotta huge heart, amazing vocals and is an avid BKBOYEEZ supporter, so we’ll do anything in our power to spread her music to the masses. So, swing thru BAR4 this Wednesday and let her know the BKBOYEEZ put you on!

This week started off with a bong… I mean a bang! We opened the week with 4:20 and although we were bombarded with rain one couldn’t help but enjoy the Earth Day festivities or the always exciting opening of Habana Outpost. I hope you updated your playlist with Dre’s album release picks right after you got hip to the exclusive joint by Poe Picasso. We showed a preview of all our volunteer jobs and hopefully we inspired you to give back. Our Q&A explored the scary thought of living without a cellphone- could you do it? But before you commit any thought to a cell-less existence, call your friends up and head to one or all of this week’s event picks. To our people celebrating birthdays this weekend GO HARD! It’s gonna be a beautiful; get out and enjoy!

In continuing with this month’s theme of giving back to the community, I’ve decided to dedicate my time toward cleaning and maintaining our beloved, Prospect Park. Not everyone in Brooklyn has the luxury of growing up in a brownstone like the Huxtables did on the Cosby Show, and for those of us who didn’t- we always saw Prospect Park as our official backyard. We never had to trek to Central Park in Manhattan for anything because Prospect Park had it all! Joggers, birds churping, African drumming on Sundays, an iceskating rink, tennis courts, the children’s Carousel, paddle boating on the lake, a zoo and Botanical Gardens, a huge Meadow for family BBQs, kite flying, frisbee throwing, dog walking, laying out in the sun… you name it, our park’s got it! For the past few weeks, myself along with other volunteers rolled up our sleeves and spruced up flower and shrub beds, removed trash, painted park benches and lightposts, and completed numerous hours of weeding. It was a tedious, but rewarding job and I learned a lot about landscaping and horticulture. But as much as we complain about there not being enough hours in the day to complete our routine tasks, you should definitely make some time for volunteer work. It looks great on a resume, it’s good exercise, it’ll enhance your appreciation for nature and you’ll feel good you were able to give back.
