  • Roxroy Salmon, a Brooklyn father of five and community leader, is fighting deportation. His is not the first case and, unfortunately, it won’t be the last. A recent study by the Homeland Security Department conducted at the request of Rep. José Serrano (D-Bronx) showed a terrible reality: From 1998 to 2007, immigration authorities deported at least 108,434 parents of U.S.-citizen children. Salmon, though, is not alone in his struggle to remain with his U.S. citizen wife and children.
  • Marty Markowitz loves being Brooklyn’s biggest booster. He’s just not that into being big. The borough president - whose robust personality is matched by his appetite - has packed on the pounds despite leading a public campaign to get his borough slim and healthy. The 64-year-old Markowitz had a heart attack several years ago, inspiring him to lose weight and up his exercise routine. He admitted yesterday he’s slipped and gained back most of what he lost.

It’s ya boi FaBid here and as you know, I bring you your weekly current events. So let me put you up on what’s been going on this week.

  • Without financial help from the government the New York City Board of Education will have to go forth with plans to lay off 5,000 employees- 2,000 of them being teachers. With a $1.4 billion budget shortfall, even if the city were to get the maximum amount allotted from the Feds, schools would still be short $500 million short by July.
  • Unemployment is on the rise. New York City has experienced its highest month to month increase in unemployment on record. We are experiencing wide spread layoffs in just about every profession. One of the few fields experiencing an increase in job growth has been education and health services.
  • President Obama conducted his first internet town hall meeting. One of the most popular topics was the legalization of marijuana. It was suggested that legalization could help stimulate the economy. Weed becoming legal would allow the government to regulate it by instituting taxes, enforce age limits, and build an industry here in the U.S. that would create jobs. As one would assume, the president is not seeing that.
  • MTA scheduled to lay off 1,100 workers in order to help clear their deficit. Just like everyone else they are hoping and waiting for bail out money from the government.
  • Plaxico Burress is planning to score a plea deal to avoid jail time for his 2009 arrest on gun charges. (When will it stop? )

Unfortunately there are very few new things happening in news at this time. As always during social, financial and political hard times the news media is dominated by these issues. I, like many others, seem to watch television and read the paper and feel like it’s the same thing day after day. It’s kind of depressing. Make sure you keep it right here.

Alright people here’s what’s been going on this week.

  • Let’s start with our boy, Bloomberg. Mike has accused the State of withholding Federal stimulus money. Due to his efforts, $2.7 billion has been recovered toward Medicaid spending with $1.9 billion coming right here to NYC.
  • It was announced this week that homelessness has been reduced by 50% since 2005- this bringing the alleged total to 2,328. Now I walk the streets of NYC every day, that number sounds crazy low.
  • Look out! Brooklyn pay toilets are coming our way. Plans are to put these at Grand Army Plaza. It will cost you 25 cents to drop off the kids. That gets you 15 mins and hopefully an upgrade from the stank potty’s we know and love.

We are experiencing a global economic crisis. Please stay up on what’s happening with these stimulus packages. You may be getting an unexpected, but much needed gift from our government.

Obama Turns Up the HEAT on Palin

So I was reading some election news online and came across Obama’s opinion of Mrs. Sarah Palin, Senator John McCain’s pick for VP. I was really interested in knowing what he thought because she had such an outspoken opinion on my pick for president. Let me know what you think :

Obama said last week’s Republican National Convention did a good job of highlighting Palin’s biography — “Mother, governor, moose shooter. That’s cool,” he said. But he said Palin really is just another Republican politician, one who is stretching the truth about her record. “When John McCain gets up there with Sarah Palin and says, `We’re for change,’ … what are they talking about?” Obama said Monday, arguing that they aren’t offering different ideas from President Bush and they are just trying to steal his campaign theme because it seemed to be working.

“It was just like a month ago they were all saying, `Oh, it’s experience, experience, experience.’ Then they chose Palin and they started talking about change, change, change,” he said.

News Brief from the Streets.

Week In Review: Sept. 1- 6

We started off the month of September right with a huge carnival in the streets of Brooklyn. We celebrated the 41st annual West Indian American Day Parade and millions of people were out in good spirits to enjoy the unique essence of the Caribbean culture. We were reminded and forewarned, however, of the powerful wrath of Hurricane Gustav lurking in the distance as it was predicted to wreak havoc on the Caribbean. Sadly, large numbers of people lost their lives to this force to be reckoned with and it didn’t die out until after moving on to its next victim, New Orleans, causing just minor damage. The inhabitants of the still developing city, who experienced devastating losses three years prior during Hurricane Katrina, were told to evacuate the city as Gustav was estimated to do WAY more damage than Katrina. [Haven’t these people gone through enough? Don’t worry my people in New Orleans; there are better days coming. Keep ya heads up Louisiana!] Luckily, New Orleans barely made out with few scrapes and bruises- just lost power as a result of fallen trees and debris. Like a gang of misfits, Hurricanes Hanna, Ike, and Josephine quickly formed behind Gustav leaving us a bit on edge, but we will remain steadfast and hope that this hurricane season doesn’t linger for too long. What’s Goin’ On?

The much anticipated 2008 Democratic National Convention was the talk of every town in America this week. You would think that Michelle Obama’s speech would have stolen the show, but not before Democratic icon, Ted Kennedy secretly graced the convention. Kennedy, who is currently battling brain cancer, courageously went against his physician’s orders in an effort to extend his support for the Obama family & the Democratic campaign… Michelle Obama’s heartfelt tribute to her husband, Barack Obama, was a true testimony of hope for America simply emphasizing Barack’s values, worldly concerns, and persistent attitude that will take him all the way to the White House. With prolific accounts of why Barack would make the ideal future president, how “normal” their all-American lives are, and most importantly, the level of her patriotism– we can all remain hopeful and witness if America is equally convinced he’s just a regular guy!… Read the rest of this entry »
