BKBOYEEZ GIVE BACK: Volunteering throughout Prospect Park

The Beauty that is Prospect Park

In continuing with this month’s theme of giving back to the community, I’ve decided to dedicate my time toward cleaning and maintaining our beloved, Prospect Park. Not everyone in Brooklyn has the luxury of growing up in a brownstone like the Huxtables did on the Cosby Show, and for those of us who didn’t- we always saw Prospect Park as our official backyard. We never had to trek to Central Park in Manhattan for anything because Prospect Park had it all! Joggers, birds churping, African drumming on Sundays, an iceskating rink, tennis courts, the children’s Carousel, paddle boating on the lake, a zoo and Botanical Gardens, a huge Meadow for family BBQs, kite flying, frisbee throwing, dog walking, laying out in the sun… you name it, our park’s got it! For the past few weeks, myself along with other volunteers rolled up our sleeves and spruced up flower and shrub beds, removed trash, painted park benches and lightposts, and completed numerous hours of weeding. It was a tedious, but rewarding job and I learned a lot about landscaping and horticulture. But as much as we complain about there not being enough hours in the day to complete our routine tasks, you should definitely make some time for volunteer work. It looks great on a resume, it’s good exercise, it’ll enhance your appreciation for nature and you’ll feel good you were able to give back.

BKBOYEEZ GIVE BACK: Volunteering at JHS 302- Rafael Cordero School

Each of the BKBOYEEZ are taking on a volunteer job this month to help give back to our community. I definitely wanted to do something that would involve the youth, so I’ve devised a workshop that will engage students creatively, socially and physically. The plan is to collectively come up with superheroes that would clean up and protect our neighborhoods. I decided to use my dance background to help create movement that would represent the supernatural ability of our hero. I hope the kids will enjoy it and hope you’ve enjoyed reading about it- so stay tuned.

BKBOYEEZ GIVE BACK: Volunteering at the Brooklyn Public Library

Photobucket

This month the BKBOYEEZ have chosen to focus on giving back to our communities by volunteering our time toward three worthy causes. I, KuTTy, chose to volunteer at the Brooklyn Public Library Flatbush branch. Children, as we have all heard throughout time, are our tomorrow and I felt it was important for me to dedicate my time to help steer them in the right direction. Storytime with children between the ages of 2 to about 6 is more than just reading words aloud and showing them pictures. It entailed dancing, singing, encouraging, and even teaching our youth. Honestly, I was sweating during the first hour, but I enjoyed every minute of it. Kids are brutally honest so it was nice to hear them say I did a good job and ask if I was coming back next week. Stay tuned to hear what the other BKBOYEEZ have volunteered their time for and use us as an example to do the same. The best thing you can do for your community is give back!

UNITY March- Brooklyn, NY

UNITY March- Brooklyn, NY

On Saturday morning I was going down the street from my block to run some early errands when I came across a march for unity- in and between the community. The group consisted of high school students who needed volunteer credit, a pastor, some boys being screamed at by a drill sergeant, and some local citizens who were all about change. When I asked why they were marching, I was told for “Unity in the Community.” Community meaning America. They are supposed to be marching on Washington the following Saturday to show what God’s family looks like. I know, but do YOU know? I wanted to show my support by blogging it because U.N.I.T.Y. would solve a lot.
